A World Championship

This year's championships were held in Prague and brought an interruption of Soviet dominance. After nine consecutive titles, the USSR had to settle for second place in this host. New Title carrier was Czechoslovakia, who won their third World Cup and beyond also won their twelfth title of European Champion. In addition to the home field advantage they may have benefited from the fact that the world championships were held about two months after the Winter Olympics. Could the Soviet team there still triumph superior, so it was not possible for her to maintain this high level until the World Cup tournament. Actually managed until 2006 the Swedish team the first team ever to win both tournaments in a year.

Venue of the tournament was the Sportovní hala ČSTV, which was then offered 14,389 spectators.
