1982–83 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1982/83 was the eighth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish champion for a fifth time and the second time since the introduction of the SM - liiga HIFK Helsinki, during Lukko Rauma relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. During the first six teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second- division club to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

Play-offs
Mode
Places 1 and 2 were qualified for the semifinals and the places 3-6 for the quarter- finals of the play-offs. The winners of those ties made it to the finals while the losers in the small final for third place played.
The quarter-finals and the match for third place were held in the mode " Best-of- Three", the semi-final and the final of the mode " Best-of -Five".

SM- liiga relegation
The two last placed SM- liiga the main round and the two best second division played in the mode " Best-of -Five" for promotion or relegation. The same number of points Kärpät Oulu and Kiekko - Reipas first played in a play the team of which had in the play-offs. In this game Kiekko - Reipas put away significantly by 7-2. Afterwards Kärpät secured in the relegation relegation while Lukko Rauma lost his duel and descent.
