1979–80 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1979/80 was the fifth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion was the fourth time overall and for the first time since the introduction of the SM - liiga HIFK Helsinki, while Koo -Vee relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. While the first four teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second- division club to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
