Overview

Somewhat surprisingly, the United States continued through as group winners of Group C. In the first game against England, the Europeans were the dominant team play and went in the 4th minute lead. But a major mistake by England's goalkeeper Robert Green just before half-time gave the U.S. an equalizer, as this could roll a harmless shot from Clint Dempsey to score. In the second game against Slovenia, the Americans showed tremendous fighting spirit than they could a 0-2 catch up yet. Clint Dempsey scored even another goal that the referee, however, because of foul play not recognized - a wrong decision. With the two points from their first two games, the United States had to win against Algeria to reach the knockout stages. In a dramatic game, the Americans were returned to form, but they achieved no results, despite numerous opportunities. Only in injury time Landon Donovan scored the redemptive goal that the United States brought the group.

England had to increase after the draw against the United States. However, towards Algeria, the British provided an expressed from weak game and did not come with a goalless draw.
