2011 GP2 Asia Series season

The GP2 Asia Series season of 2011 was the fourth and final season of the GP2 Asia Series. The season began on 11 February at the Yas Island and ended on March 20 in Imola. Two scheduled race weekends in as- Sachir were canceled due to the protests in Bahrain 2011. Romain Grosjean won for the second time the champion of the GP2 Asia Series. DAMS, his team won the team title.

Changes the teams

DPR and Meritus were no longer at the start of the 2011 season. For this took Carlin, Racing Engineering Team AirAsia and three new teams of the season in part. Race Calendar

The race calendar of the GP2 Asia series originally consisted of three race weekends on two routes. Because of political unrest in Bahrain had the second race weekend, which was scheduled for 17 to 19 February, will be canceled before the start of training. First race weekend: Yas Marina Circuit

Main race

The main race at the Yas Marina Circuit was held on February 11, 2011 and went over a distance of 33 laps of 4.730 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 156.090 km. The GP2 Asia race weekend took place on a shorter track version than the last GP2 race weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Originally the race over a distance of 36 laps should be discharged. It must, however, be interrupted after starting accident to clean the track. Dani Clos remained at start are. Luiz Razia did not see that Clos had stopped, and went sideways purely in his car. In this case, both cars were pushed to the side and met Pål Varhaug, which turned out well. All three pilots were unhurt.

Below certain a duel for first place between Jules Bianchi, who had passed before the demolition to Romain Grosjean, the race. Sprint race

The sprint race at the Yas Marina Circuit was held on 12 February 2011 and received over a distance of 26 laps of 4.730 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 122.980 km.

Already before the start an investigation against Giedo van der Garde was initiated as a mechanic was on his car too long. After he had driven after starting to second place behind Stefano Coletti, he was occupied after a few rounds with a drive-through penalty and dropped to the rear of the field.

After Romain Grosjean had failed in the first round after a spin, the race first took place without change of position. The first four pilots: Coletti, Sam Bird, Josef Král and Marcus Ericsson broke away from the rest of the field. Behind it lay a little distance Davide Valsecchi, Fabio Leimer, Jules Bianchi and Michael Herck.

While the position remained unchanged at the top down to a failure of Bird, it still managed to Bianchi in the final phase of Leimer and Valsecchi to drive past. Leimer was also overtaken by Herck.

Coletti finally won his first race before Král and Ericsson. The other points were awarded to Valsecchi, Herck and Leimer.

Although Bianchi came in fourth place finish, but he was occupied with Nathanael Berthon and Charles Pic for ignoring yellow flags with a 20 -second penalty. Pic forsake his place among the first ten pilots and hence the bonus point for the fastest lap, for which one had to finish the race in the top ten. Bianchi, who dropped only to eighth place, finally got the bonus point.

In the championship the first three positions remained unchanged. The team Lotus ART remained in the lead. iSport International took over the second position from the DAMS.

Race weekends: Bahrain International Circuit ( canceled )

The second race weekend was supposed to be held from 17 to 19 February 2011 at the Bahrain International Circuit. Because of political unrest first practice and qualifying were postponed. A little later the entire race weekend has been canceled.

The main race was the sprint race, going over a distance of 32 laps of 5.412 kilometers, which would have the suited a total distance of 173.184 km, and over a distance of 23 laps of 5.412 kilometers, which would have the suited a total distance of 124.746 km.

Shortly thereafter, also the third race weekend, which was originally on 12 and 13 February 2011 should also take place at the Bahrain International Circuit, canceled.

Second race weekend Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari

Main race

The main race at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari took place on 19 March 2011 and received over a distance of 35 laps of 4.909 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 171.815 km.

Romain Grosjean defended the lead at the start against Giedo van der Garde, who went into the race from fifth place. Jules Bianchi, who had led the drivers' standings before the race started not optimal and fell behind Josef Král back to fifth place. Bianchi was located between the Arden- pilots, as Jolyon Palmer was behind him. Palmer, however, damaged in the first round his front wing in a duel with Bianchi and fell back to the rear panel.

While Grosjean safely lay on the first position and dominated the race, overtook Bianchi Král and took the fourth position. During his pit stop, he was able to go past Michael Herck. Further improvements position not reach him.

For iSport International, the race was not running optimally. First, Sam Bird fell at the start of the second back to eighth place. Later it came to a team-internal collision between Bird and Marcus Ericsson, turned out at the Bird and Ericsson dropped out of the points.

Grosjean finally came in first place to the finish and was also the pilot, who scored the fastest lap of the race. Van der Garde was second ahead of Bianchi and Herck. Behind it was a larger gap to fifth-placed driver Stefano Coletti, who started the race from 16th place. The other points were awarded to Fabio Leimer, Dani Clos and Fairuz Fauzy.

Originally Davide Valsecchi came in sixth place finish, however, he was disqualified because of a non-compliant racing car.

The victory Grosjean took the lead in the championship by Bianchi. In another seven to be awarded points Grosjean had a five-point lead on Bianchi.

Sprint race

The sprint race at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari took place on March 20, 2011 and received over a distance of 25 laps of 4.909 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 122.725 km.

Starting from the pole position came Fairuz Fauzy not well in the race and lost several positions. Prior to the first corner he drove into the car during braking by Stefano Coletti, who met on Jules Bianchi. All three pilots dropped out. Bianchi's resignation was synonymous with the early title win by Romain Grosjean, who could be obtained by any other pilots more.

After the race, Grosjean, however, was occupied by a 20 -second time penalty and dropped back to seventh place. Grosjean had shortened the distance in a overtaking of Gutiérrez and achieved an advantage. In addition, Johnny Cecotto Jr. was punished with a subsequent 20 -second time penalty because the race stewards gave him the blame for a collision with Sam Bird, retired at the Bird. Grosjean was thus for the second time after 2008 GP2 Asia champion. Bianchi retained the second place overall ahead of van der Garde. In the team standings DAMS won.
