40th Berlin International Film Festival

The Berlin International Film Festival 1990 began on February 9 and ended on 20 February 1990.

The Berlinale 1990 was marked by the Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989. Numerous international guests attending the festival not only to present films, but to be photographed on the remains. Also the festival responded to the events and in the forum of seven previously showed unpublished prohibited DDR movies. The oldest from 1965 by directors such as Jürgen Böttcher, Egon Günther, Gerhard Klein, Kurt Maetzig, Günter Stahnke, Frank Vogel and Herrmann Zschoche. In the competition was shown as a special performance of Frank Beyer's Traces of Stones.

The festival was opened with Steel Magnolias, which was shown out of competition.

International Jury

President of the international jury of the German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. He stood in front of the following judges: Vadim Abdraschitow, Suzana Amaral, Steven Bach, Roberto Benigni, Gyarmathy, Margaret Menegoz, Helke Misselwitz, Otto Sander, Stephen Silverman and Rita Tushingham.

  • Silver Bears: Special Jury Prize: The asthenic syndrome
  • Best Director: Michael Verhoeven for The Nasty Girl
  • Best Actress: Jessica Tandy in Driving Miss Daisy and her chauffeur
  • Best Actor: Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy and her chauffeur and Iain Glen in the silent scream
  • Outstanding Single Performance: Xie Fei Black for the Director of Snow
  • Special Artistic Achievement: Heiner Carow for Coming Out

The Honorary Golden Bear was awarded this year to Oliver Stone.
