Albert Lester

Albert Lester (* around 1803 in Litchfield, Connecticut, † March 14, 1867 in Canandaigua, New York) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party).

Political career

Lester began his political career with his election to the Senate from New York, where he represented the 7th District from 1844 to 1847. At that time, in May 1847 was the Acting Lieutenant Governor of New York, Addison Gardiner, elected to the Court of Appeals of New York where he performed at his office on July 5. Consequently, he gave up his post as vice-governor, which led to a vacancy, as the Lieutenant Governor of its own motion ( ex officio) is the President of the Senate. As the New York Legislature met between 8 September and 15 December for an extraordinary session, Lester was elected president pro tempore of the Senate and consequently was appointed acting lieutenant governor. He held the office until the end of the year. Urged by Governor John Young passed the Legislature on September 27, an Act to conduct a by-election for the office of Lieutenant Governor to fill the vacancy. When subsequently performed choice Hamilton Fish was elected, who took office on 1 January 1848.

Lester was buried after his death on the West Avenue Cemetery, Canandaigua.
