Alchevsk

Alchevsk (Ukrainian Алчевськ; Russian Алчевск ) is a city in the Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine. The city is part of the agglomeration Alchevsk - Stakhanov, has 114,000 inhabitants (2013 ) and is an important center of metallurgy (2 combines ).

Alchevsk lies on the international highway over which the Oblastzentrum Luhansk is about 44 km away to the east.

History

A workers' settlement was founded in 1895 next to the railway station Jurjewka by the entrepreneur Olexij Altschewskij. 1901, the station and the settlement was renamed in honor of the late tragically entrepreneur in Alchevsk. 1932, the place became a town. 1931-1961 the city was called Woroschilowsk and 1961-1991 Kommunarsk.
