Alghero Airport (Italian: Aeroporto di Alghero -Fertilia "Riviera del Corallo " ) is an Italian commercial airport at Alghero in the north -west Sardinia.

Location and Connections

The airport is located near the village of Fertilia, in the plain between the Coral Riviera in the south and the region of La nurra in the north. Alghero is situated about ten kilometers south of the provincial capital of Sassari, approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the airport.

There are bus services to various cities of the island, partly on indirect services in Sassari. The airport will be connected to the railway line Sassari -Alghero.

Airlines and destinations

There are scheduled flights to the Italian mainland and connections with many European cities. The Irish airline Ryanair has a base in Alghero. Other important companies in Alghero are Alitalia and Meridiana Fly. Especially in the summer months revived the charter traffic from Central and Northern Europe.

History

1937 was built a docking station for flying boats and terminal facilities of Ala Littoria located in the west-northwest of Alghero Bay of Porto Conte ( ⊙ 40.5991666666678.1961111111111 ). The latter combined with Ostia, near Rome, Alghero and Cagliari, at times even with Genoa and Barcelona. The flights had to be discontinued a few years later due to the war.

The approximately five kilometers northeast of the bay of Porto Conte airport Fertilia was built in 1938 as a military airfield in an elliptical shape. In the West, was built some buildings and hangars, 1943 started the construction of a concrete airstrip. The scheduled service between Rome and Alghero -Fertilia began in 1946. Later flew on this route especially the Alitalia subsidiary ATI. The charter began in the mid 1950s, initially particularly in the UK. Early 1960s had left the airfield a 2,200 -meter-long airstrip, a hangar served as terminal building. 1968 a new terminal was built in the mid- 1970s extended the runway to 3,000 meters. 1974 took over the civil aviation administration airport. The inauguration of the current terminals occurred in 2003, the renovation of runway 2004.
