Oristano

Oristano ( Sardinian: Maristanis or Aristanis - between the lagoons ) is an Italian town with 31 095 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the west of Sardinia.

Geography

Oristano is capital of the province of Oristano ( province abbreviations: OR) and located in the northwest of the fertile Campidano. Here is the Tirso, the longest river in Sardinia flows into the sea; because of its flooding it is called the Sardinian Nile.

History

In the 9th century BC, the location on the Sinis peninsula on the coast Tharros was already a Phoenician trading center in the western Mediterranean. The Romans came and went. The Geographer Giorgio Ciprio mentioned since 534 AD, to Byzantium protected town, in the year 636 as the assaults of the Moors accumulated, Oristano has been built with the stones of the Punic coastal settlement Tharros, in 1070 moved the judge Onroccus di Arborea the capital of giudicato Tharros to nearby Aristanis.

The history of the city is mainly associated with the giudicato Arborea and the great period of the Judges Mariano IV and Eleonora of Arborea. The city as the capital of giudicato controlled at that time half Sardinia. 1409 lost the judge Guglielmo II the Schlachtvon Sanluri against the Spanish crown and the giudicato lost influence. 1478 the island came under Spanish rule.

Here in 1921, the Sardinian Action Party was founded.

Structures

  • The cathedral was built from 1228 under the judge Marianus and several times later rebuilt and expanded.
