Terralba

Terralba (of terra alba and: White Earth ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,452 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Oristano in the west of Sardinia. The municipality is situated approximately 20 km south-southeast of Oristano and about 70 kilometers northwest of Cagliari. Terralba is immediately adjacent to the province of Medio Campidano. The district Marceddì located directly on the Gulf of Oristano. Geographically, the municipality in the east by the Monte Arci and Marmillan is limited. South of Marceddì is the Stagno di Marceddì and the Stagno di San Giovanni, a large bay which is inhabited by numerous animals and plants because of the high salt content as a habitat.

History

As early as the Neolithic Age, the area was settled. Finally, the Carthaginians founded a settlement here, the Greek as Neapolis ( New City) was called. 238 BC This settlement was conquered by the Romans. The present settlement Terralba goes back to a destruction of the settlement by the Saracens, so probably in 1017, the foundation was. From the 12th to the 16th century Terralba was a bishopric.

Economy and Transport

At the Monte Arci obsidian there is retention, which can be degraded. Through the community, the Strada Statale 126 performs roughly parallel to State Road 131 west of the village, linking with Cagliari Oristano. With the neighboring communities is a common station ( Marrubiu - Terralba - arborea) on the non-electrified rail route Cagliari - Golfo Aranci Marittima. Several neighboring communities have joined together to Unione dei Comuni del Terralbese. These are in addition to Terralba: Marrubiu, Arborea, San Nicolò d' Arcidano, Uras.
