Anton Šťastný

Anton Šťastný (* August 5, 1959 in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak professional ice hockey player who played from 1980 to 1989 for the Quebec Nordiques in the National Hockey League.

Career

He began his career in the former Czechoslovakia at Slovan Bratislava CHJZD. After a fourth place last year, he won the junior of his country the silver medal at the Junior World Championship 1979 in Sweden. In the same year he got together with his brothers and with the seniors in the World Cup squad and was able to prove also the second place in Moscow. Already at the NHL Amateur Draft 1978, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the twelfth round as 198. A year later he came again into the Draft and has now drawn already in the fourth round than 83 NHL Entry Draft by the Quebec Nordiques in 1979.

An international highlight should be the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid for him in 1980, but after losing to the United States and Sweden in the preliminary round were all hopes of a medal there. After the end of the Olympic Games succeeded Anton to settle with his brother Peter in the United States. Both applied for citizenship of the United States and the Quebec Nordiques joined them.

From the 1980/81 season the Šťastný brothers attended in the NHL sensation. With 85 points Anton played a great rookie season. In this year he also succeeded to establish a valid record to date. With a 11:7 victory at the Washington Capitals, he was able to contribute 8 points ( 3 goals 5 assists). In an away game this was only his brother Peter, who scored four goals and four assists in the same game. A year later, with Marián also the eldest brother to Quebec. Seven years in a row he reached with the Nordiques the playoffs and was always among the Topscorern of the team. After he had only come in the 1988/89 season on 37 points and had been used sporadically in the AHL farm team at the Halifax Citadel, he opted for a change back to Europe.

He played three years in Switzerland, a first season with Fribourg- Gottéron and then two seasons for the EHC Olten. At the end of his career he returned to Slovan Bratislava in the Slovak Extraliga back. In 1994, he finished his career.
