History

The first documents about the city Baricella go back to the 13th century, when the development of the urban core gradually began.

Middle Ages

It originally formed a single community with the parish Altedo and was with Minerbio part of the former territory of Valle dei Conti ( Valley of the Graefe ). The flooding from the river Savena caused at least until the beginning of the 14th century that the land was swampy and inhospitable. Of these, forwards the original place name Guazzarello ( guazzare from Italian, ie wade ) from.

The municipal coat of arms indicated today still pointed to the historical situation of the then territory. It shows a fish, the most important foods in the lowlands of the river Savena, as well as a passing ferry that shuttled up to the removal of Cavo Benedettino in the 17th century in the Canale Navile and was stationed in the village of Passo Segni.

The first documents that mention Baricella, date from the 15th century. At that time, the management of Baricella has been terminated due to the many difficulties in the development of both places due to the frequent flooding of the city Altedo. The origins of the name derives from the located in the municipality eastern border crossing between the Republic of Bologna and of the Este (Family) Estes managed city of Ferrara. The place was on the Savena and was characterized by a thriving legal and illegal movement of goods, that the officials of Bologna the village as the seat of Bargelli elected (officials with special orders such as police and customs control ).

15th Century

The expansion of the parish church in 1461 proves the prosperous situation of the population, which was then become too small for the needs of an ever growing community.

Early 16th century, the area status was raised to County and the cousins Lattanzio and Ludovico Felicini offered. Shortly afterwards, however, the county was abolished, because the Pope was afraid that a too high number of feudal territories could limit the excessive power of the city to the countryside. That is why the place came under the rule of the Senate of Bologna.

19th century

In the 19th century, numerous soil remediation work throughout the area have been made. Thanks to the administrative division of the Napoleonic era and especially the industrialization of the area late 19th and early 20th century led in May 1891 to build a now-defunct tram between the site and the city center of Bologna. In this age a fairground was founded, which still today incites many visitors. 1828 is also a small theater was built, of which only the traces can still be seen today.
