Grizzana Morandi

Grizzana Morandi is an Italian commune in the province of Bologna with 3939 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) on an area of 77 km ².

Location

The municipality comprises the hilly area, which is cleaved by the Setta Valley and the Reno valley. The artistic and historical importance is considerable in the western part of the area and the municipal seat. There, you can still visit the house of the famous painter Giorgio Morandi, in which a museum is housed today. The eastern part has won after the construction of State Road 325 and the train station at Piandisetta important.

History

For various archaeological findings and studies of documents and other materials, it is concluded that the first settlers were the Etruscans. After that the Ligurians and Celts and finally the Romans came.

In the Middle Ages different powers exercised their rule. In this country alternated in fact feudal families from Bologna and from Tuscany from other noble families of smaller rank, bishops and religious orders. Attractions

The entire municipality has many attractions. Among them are several secluded hamlets and villages, old churches and towers dating from the modern period, and individual buildings, as well as the landscape itself. Giorgio Morandi formed from these landscapes in his paintings.

In the municipal seat, the Centro Morandi was founded, a document center located in the town hall and that, even under didactic aspects to make the preservation of cultural and natural the region to the task. Not far from the center of Grizzana is also the tourist accessible house of the famous painter.

The medieval hamlet

In the area between Mount Vigese and the Reno valley all the most important historical buildings of the area are preserved in the medieval villages of Poggio, Sterpi, Predolo, Cà Brunetti and La Scola. In La Scola notable buildings can be admired from the 15th and 16th centuries, such as the Casa Montanelli, where interesting frescoes are preserved from the 16th century, three towers, a shrine from the 15th century and two prayer houses.

At the top, the Montovolo is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione ( Holy Mary of Consolation ) with its Romanesque pit, the only original part, because the rest was restored and expanded in the 13th century.

In Savignano, in the south- west of the township Grizzana Morandi, the Rocchetta Mattei is particularly noteworthy because of their shape and their contrast with the surrounding area. The Rocchetta is a 19th- century castle, whose construction was allowed to be inspired by the example of medieval castles. This castle was built by Count Cesare Mattei built in a similar manner as King Ludwig of Bavaria. Its towers even have domes, reminiscent of the Frauenkirche in Munich.
