Castel Maggiore

Castel Maggiore is a town with 17,556 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Bologna. It is located 9 km north of the provincial capital of Bologna.

History

The first documents that mention the church date from the 10th century. At that time the town was called Castaniolo (small chestnut tree). Legend has it that the name goes back to a large chestnut strain ( a navigable channel) was stranded in the area of the municipality by the Canale Navile. Later Castaniolo was nicknamed Maggiore, to distinguish it from a homonymous village in the municipality of Bentivoglio.

The town was renamed in 1818 by the Papal States, to which he belonged, in Castel Maggiore.

During World War II the town was repeatedly exposed to heavy bomber attacks due to their position on the railway line Bologna - Padua.
