Vergato

Vergato is a town with 7579 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bologna.

Location and data

The main village is located in the lowlands of the Reno Valley, on the state road Porretana. However, the municipality and its villages includes the Apennines and combines this with the related Po Valley.

History

The rulers of Frignano ruled the area around Vergato to about 1000th With the death of Matilda of Tuscany, the area was ceded back to the community Bologna.

After many vicissitudes Vergato has gradually become the most important capital in the area. It was the beginning of the 15th century, the seat of the Capitanato della Montagna ( an administrative district in the area of Bologna, from which the whole mountainous landscape was subject to Bologna). The then government palace has now been converted into the town hall.

Towns and attractions

Many of the towns and hamlets in the area are much of the history and culture here. Among those Calenzano is significant, an ancient village that existed in the year 1000 and in particular its church of Madonna del Bosco ( Our Lady of the forest ). Another significant town is Sanguineta.

Pieve di Roffeno, now a small secluded and not as good of developed hamlet, played in the Middle Ages because of its church quite important. The parish church, built in 1155, is one of the most interesting of the Apennines. The apse and part of the boundary walls are the original Romanesque building.

Worth seeing are Casa Berti in Prunarolo with its tower from the 16th century, the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Riola, which was designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the medieval fortresses of Costonzo and Monzone (8th - 14th century) at Montecavalloro, Casa Laffi Tolè, a building from the 16th century with a tower for the pigeons catch and La Torre ( the Tower ), an old municipal palace, the 14 - due 15th century.
