Beluran

Federal State

Beluran is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It belongs to the same administrative district (District Beluran ) and is located 80 kilometers west of Sandakan. The city is part of the area Sandakan Division, which includes the districts Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Tongod.

Etymology

The name comes from the language of the Beluran Tidong and Dusun at Sungai Labuk. Originally thus in conjunction with a hill a landmark ( Buludan ) meant. As a result of incorrect pronunciation and spelling it gained its present Beluran.

Demography

The population of the city is Beluran according to the last census 3,132 inhabitants. The population consists of a mixture of different ethnic groups, most notably Tidong, Kadazan, Dusun and Orang Sungai. As in many other cities in Sabah, there are also a considerable number of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines, mainly from Sulu and Mindanao, which are not registered in the population statistics.
