Kuala Penyu

Federal State

Kuala Penyu is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It belongs to the same administrative district (District Kuala Penyu ) and is located 100 kilometers south of the state capital of Kota Kinabalu. The city is part of the territory Interior Division, which includes the districts of Beaufort, Keningau, Kuala Penyu, Nabawan, Sipitang, Tambunan and Tenom.

Geography

Kuala Penyu is in the northwest of the island of Borneo in the peninsula Klias ( Klias Peninsula ) to the southwest side of Kimani's Bay. The region was originally completely covered with mangrove swamps.

Etymology

The name comes from Kuala Penyu doing a rock formation on the river bank ( malay. kuala ), reminiscent of the appearance of turtles ( malay. penyu ). In the early 1960s, the area was known under the name sitompok, which in turn refers to a group of stones.

Demography

The population of Kuala Penyus is, according to the last census in 2010 659 inhabitants and consists mostly of Malay and Kadazan Dusun Tatana or which represent the largest ethnic group.

Infrastructure

Until February 26, 2012 Binsulok Kampung Kuala Penyu out could only be reached by a ferry. A new bridge over the Sungai Sitompok the city now binds directly to the coastal road to the north. The driving distance from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Penyu will be shortened by about 25 kilometers.

Attractions

Kuala Penyu is the gateway to Pulau Tiga National Park. For 158 -square-kilometer marine park includes the three islands of Pulau Tiga, Pulau Besar and Pulau Kalampunian Kalampunian order. The islands emerged in 1897 during the eruption of a mud volcano. Pulau Besar and Pulau Tiga Kalampunian were filmed and venue of the U.S. and UK version of Survivor: Borneo, a reality show.

Kuala Penyu is known for its beaches Tempurung Beach, Sawangan Beach and Sungai Labuan Waterfront.

" Pesta Rumbia " is a festival in honor of the countless sago palms that cover the area.
