Kunak

Federal State

Kunak is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Kunak is located on the east coast to the north of the island of Borneo in the open to Sulawesi Darvel Bay. The city belongs to the same County District kunak and is 121 km in a straight line south of Sandakan. Kunak is part of the area Tawau Division to which the districts kunak, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Tawau and Papar belong.

History

Kampung Tingkayu at kunak is the location of various bifaces from the late Pleistocene, which can be the first human activities in eastern Borneo dating back to 30,000 years before our era.

The naming of kunak based on an eponymous ship of the Straits Steamship Company, which was anchored in the 1960s in the Darvel Bay. This also means that today's kunak got its name after 1960.

Demography

The population of kunak is, according to the last census in 2010 13.823 inhabitants. It consists mainly of Bajau and Bugis. As in many other cities in Sabah, there are also a considerable number of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines, mainly from Sulu and Mindanao, which are not registered in the population statistics.

Economy

The main source of income for many residents, is the planting of oil palm trees. A settlement of emigrants from the Cocos Islands is located a few kilometers outside the city near the plantation Giram Oil Palm Estate ( Golden Hope Berhad ).

Infrastructure

The ferry dock and the "wet market " for agricultural and maritime fresh products are in Pengkalan kunak, about five kilometers from the city.

2002, a public hospital with 76 beds was built in the city. Around the same time, a new highway between kunak and Semporna was opened.
