Pitas is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It belongs to the same administrative district (District Pitas ) and is located 175 kilometers north of the capital Kota Kinabalu. The city is part of the area Kudat Division, which includes the districts of Kudat, Pitas and Kota Marudu, and some offshore islands.

Geography

Pitas is located in the north of Borneo island on the western side of the Marudu Bay.

Origin of the name

Pitas is derived from the word nopitas. In the language of the local indigenous peoples of this word designates an area to which access was cut off by a river.

Demography

The population of pitas is, according to the last census in 2010 895 inhabitants and consists mainly of Rungus, a sub-group of the Kadazan and Orang Sungai ( which include the Tambanuas be expected ). As in many other cities in Sabah, there are also a considerable number of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines, mainly from Sulu and Mindanao, which are not registered in the population statistics.
