Bongawan

Federal State

Bongawan is a municipality in the west of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Bongawan located in West Coast Division, about 60 kilometers south of the state capital Kota Kinabalu. Administratively, it belongs to the district of Papar.

Demography

The population is, according to the last census, 253 inhabitants and consists mainly of Malays and Chinese.

Etymology

The name is derived from Bongawan " Bangau ", the local term for a white egret. This species is often found in the rice fields of the environment.

Attractions

Bongawan one of the few communities where the old shops have received from the period before the Second World War. Unlike in the larger cities, which have been badly damaged by Japanese and Allied attacks, the wooden buildings have survived from the year 1939, the time. Most of the shops are run by Hakka and Hokkien.

Infrastructure

Bongawan is connected with a breakpoint at the railway Kota Kinabalu - Tenom Sabah State Railway. A feeder road connects the village to the highway A2 (Pan Borneo Highway).
