Ranau

Federal State

Ranau is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is located in the mountainous region of the Crocker Ranges in the north of the island of Borneo and part of the eponymous administrative district (District Ranau ). Ranau is part of the region West Coast Division to which the districts of Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Penampang, Putatan and Papar belong.

Etymology

The name Ranau is derived from the word Ranahon, which means rice fields in the language of the Dusun. While the rice is being planted by the Dusun after the dry method in the mountain areas, usually called Parai tidong, however, the cultivation method differs in the level of Ranau is that wet rice cultivation is done here. Over time Ranahon was shortened to Ranau.

Demography

The population Ranaus is, according to the last census, 8,970 inhabitants. Ranau is mainly populated by the indigenous group of Dusun. There is also a small Chinese community of Hakka, Hokkien and other Chinese who have settled long ago in Ranau. In addition, you will find Malay, Kadazan, Murut and other indigenous peoples of Sabah.

Language

Although most people have mastered the Malay language in Ranau, is by the locals - Dusun spoken as the main language - especially the older generation. The Chinese community speaks Mandarin and Chinese dialects (mainly Hakka Chinese). The residents of the district members of other ethnic groups maintain their own languages. Economy

Located at an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level, Ranau for its hilly landscape and as the largest supplier of highland vegetables in the state of Sabah is known.

Apart from agriculture, Ranau heard as a starting point for hikes to Mount Kinabalu and Kinabalu National Park, the Poring Hot Springs and the Sabah Tea Garden among the most visited tourist places in Sabah. Industry, which is linked to the tourism sector, is mainly present in Kundasang.

Until its closure in 1999, Ranau was home of the only copper mine in Malaysia, the Mamut Copper Mine. From 1975, in addition to copper, gold and silver was recovered in the Tagenbau. In recent years, the left by the mine damage emerged ever more clearly and called politicians and local environmentalists on the plan, calling for a comprehensive redevelopment of the site.
