Kinarut

Federal State

Kinarut is a city in the west of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Kinarut located in West Coast Division, about 20 kilometers south of the state capital Kota Kinabalu. Administratively, it belongs to the district of Papar.

Origin of the name

The name Kinarut is believed to have originated from the term " China Road " (English for China Street ) and refers to a road through the town, going about on the Chinese traders about their business.

History

Kinarut originally belonged to the Sultanate of Brunei. When Sultan Abdul Mubin Hakkul had to withdraw in the late 17th century during the Civil War from Pulau Cermin, he left on a strategically located, by two rivers protected hill attachment construct. He remained there ten years as Sultan of Kinarut and was at this time that piracy off the coast significantly curb. With the help of the local Bajau and Dusun he beat back several attacks of the Sultan Muhiyiddin.

Demography

The population is 18,029 inhabitants according to the last census and of mainly Malay, Kadazan - Dusun and a large number Bajau together.

Historic architecture

Kinarut one of the cities on the west coast of Sabah, whose historical development has been preserved from the years 1910 to 1930 in parts today. This includes

  • About a build between 1910 and 1920 series of ten stores ( shophouse row) compared to the train station and
  • A little later built second series of ten shops, which continues the first row in the southwest.

A Chinese primary school, an administration building and the Chinese Temple Shi Tien Nam Buddhist Temple was also erected in close proximity to the shops. Of architectural interest are the differences between the two shophouses, both of which stem from the colonial period.

Attractions

Among the branches of the Sabah Museum include the ruins of a manor house in the Greco- Roman style. It was founded in 1910 by the first manager of Kinarut Rubber Estate, Mr. WFC Asimont built. The Kinarut Mansion is one of the few stone houses of that time that still exist in Sabah. Referred to as Kinarut Mansion panoramic site was added to the list of historic sites in Sabah on 22 August 1994.

Infrastructure

Kinarut is situated on the A2 motorway (Pan Borneo Highway) and is equipped with a breakpoint at the railway Kota Kinabalu - Tenom Sabah State Railway connected.
