Kalabakan

Kalabakan is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Kalabakan is located at Sungai Kalabakan 85 kilometers as the crow flies west of Tawau. The town belongs to the administrative district of Tawau and is part of the area Tawau Division.

Infrastructure

Kalabakan is connected via a well maintained asphalt road at Tawau The infrastructure of the town is on a very low levels so there is neither a hospital nor a municipal water supply. Power is available on diesel-powered generators.

Konfrontasi

Mid- December 1963 sent the Indonesian side of a commando unit, consisting of 128 volunteers and 35 regular soldiers in the border area with Malaysia. The aim of the operation was initially Kalabakan take and then zuzumarschieren to Tawau and Sandakan. On 29 December, the unit came upon a camp with soldiers of the 3rd Royal Malay Regiment. The attackers managed to throw several grenades into the sleeping quarters of this attack completely unprepared soldiers. In this case, seven soldiers and the commander were killed and another 19 wounded. Armed Police units did eventually push away the attackers after a two-hour battle to the north.

A memorial at the entrance ( Tugu Peringatan Kalabakan ) is reminiscent of the attack on Kalabakan and to the men who came in the defense of Kalabakan against the Indonesian invaders on December 29, 1963 died: Major Zainol Abidin Bin Hj Yaacob Ismail bin Mat, Abdullah Bin Abd Rahman, Abd Aziz Bin Abd Ghani, Mohamad Zain Bin Yaacob Ismail Bin Mansor, Yusof Bin Sulong and Shamsuddin Bin Yasin.
