Bönigen is a municipality in the Interlaken- Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Name

The name Bönigen " with the people, the clan Bono " is composed of the Old High German personal name Bono and place names mission - ingun.

Geography

Bönigen located in the Bernese Oberland on the southern shore of Lake Brienz. The neighboring communities of the north are starting clockwise: Iseltwald, Gündlischwand, Gsteigwiler, Matten bei Interlaken, Wilderswil and Interlaken.

The flat alluvial plain between Lake Brienz and Thun, where the village is located is called Bödeli.

The actual village center is located along the northwestern boundary of the municipality along to the mountain to the lake and is grown almost Interlaken.
