Burg- Reuland, named after the Burg Reuland, is the southernmost municipality of the German-speaking Community in Belgium. It is located in the extreme southeast of the province of Liège south of Sankt Vith in the valley of the Our.

Geography

The community is located east of the Plateau des Tailles, the 652 m highest point in the Ardennes in the West Eifel. In the east, the districts Auel, Steffeshausen and Weweler lie in the valley of the Our. The place Reuland with the eponymous castle is situated in the valley of the Our inflow Ulf which drains more than three quarters of the community. In the northwest of the municipality stems from the inflow Our Braunlauf which drains the west of the town of St. Vith. The southernmost part of the municipal district with the town of Ouren forms a triangle with Germany and Luxembourg.

Neighboring communities

In the West, Burg-Reuland borders Gouvy and to the southern part of the municipality of Durbuy. To the north lies the region Saint Viths. To the east beyond the German -Belgian border, the unitary councils Prüm and Arzfeld and to the south the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

History

History of the town of Burg- Reuland

The municipal area in 1815 slammed the Congress of Vienna the Prussian Rhine Province and was in 1919 by the Treaty of Versailles in Belgium. The church today Burg- Reuland was created on 1 January 1977 by the municipality merger of the former municipalities Reuland and Thommen.

Museums

In the House of Culture Burg- Reulands - the former school of the place - is home to a local history museum, shows the everyday objects rural life. This includes household appliances, tools, ancient crafts and agricultural equipment. This building includes the Paul Gerardy Museum is housed. There are exhibits to see the life and work of the writer.

Structures

In the village Burg- Reuland Reuland stands the castle, one of the largest castle ruins in the Eifel.

In the district Bracht is the small Rector Church of the Sorrowful Mother and the castle built in 1782 Bracht.

The monument in Europe Ouren stands in a small park and was inaugurated in October 1977.

In the town of Burg -Reuland, there are a total of 19 churches and chapels. With St. Peter's Church in Ouren, St. Hubertus Chapel in Weweler, St. Stephen 's Church in the village Burg- Reuland and St. Remacle 's church in Thommen are four of them under monument protection.

Nature

The rural municipality is dominated by the valley of the Our. It is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers, and the mainstay of the local tourism.

Infrastructure

The shops in the village are limited to bakeries and butcheries. The municipality belongs to the catchment area of a shopping center, which was built in Schmëtt in the northern tip of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The nearest train station is also located in Luxembourg, in Troisvierges ( Lux: Elwen / dt: . Ulflingen ).

From 1889 to 1952, a branch line of the Vennbahn by Reuland. She joined Aachen with Luxembourg, was therefore of national importance. In Troisvierges she had connection to the Luxembourg Northern Railway ( Railway Luxembourg - Spa). Between the castle - Reulander Lengeler district and the district Ulflinger Wilwerdange ( Wilwerdange ) led them through a 700 m long tunnel. In the Battle of the Bulge in the closing stages of the Second World War, the route of the German Wehrmacht was interrupted by blowing up bridges. After that, only the portion of Reuland is frequented by Troisvierges to decommissioning. Now the path is prepared piece by piece as part of the Ravel network for cyclists and walkers, which in turn is a part of the Vennbahnradweges.
