Carlentini

Carlentini is a municipality in the province of Siracusa in Sicily region of Italy with 17,985 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Carlentini is located 40 km west of Syracuse. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring communities are Augusta, Buccheri, Catania, Ferla, Franco Fonte, Lentini, Melilli and Sortino.

History

The community was established in 1551. After the 1542 earthquake, the inhabitants of the damaged city Lentini should move here. The city's name is a combination of the name of the then ruler of the Holy Roman Empire Charles V and the city Lentini.
