Ferla

Ferla is a municipality in the province of Syracuse in the region of Sicily in Italy with 2586 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Ferla is located 40 km west of Syracuse. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and sheep breeding.

The neighboring municipalities are Buccheri, Buscemi, Carlentini, Cassaro and Sortino.

History

The town's name derives from ferula, named after a growing in this area flowers. Since the 12th century it is mentioned. In the earthquake of 1693, the town was destroyed. Today's Ferla was built north of the old city. Through the reconstruction Ferla has a strong baroque character.

  • Church of San Giacomo was built right after the 1693 earthquake,
  • Church of San Sebastiano Martire founded in the 15th century, rebuilt after the earthquake. The church is a three-aisled basilica with a Baroque portal.

  • Church of Sant'Antonio Abate in the 17th century with a Baroque facade, side chapels, an octagonal dome and paintings and stucco inside. The church has two towers, which is unusual for a parish church.

Outside the village

Outside the town, the necropolis of Pantalica can be visited. The Necropolis of Pantalica is one of the great necropolis of Sicily and includes more than 5000 tombs. It is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
