Sortino

Sortino is a city of Syracuse in Sicily region of Italy with 8837 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Sortino is located 32 km west of Syracuse. The inhabitants work mainly in industry and agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Carlentini, Cassaro, Ferla, Melilli, Palazzolo Acreide, Priolo Gargallo and Solarino.

History

In the 1542 earthquake, the city was badly damaged, totally destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. The place was then built at the present site again.

Outside Sortino

On the territory of the municipality is home to the World Heritage Necropolis of Pantalica and ruins of ancient settlements. The necropolis of about 5000 Siculi lie in the Iblei, the oldest are from 1270 BC, the most recent dating from the 8th century BC.
