Carlos Paião

Carlos Manuel de Marques Paião ( born 1 November 1957 in Coimbra, † August 26, 1988 at Rio Maior ) was a Portuguese singer and songwriter.

Career

Paião was born in Coimbra, and spent his childhood in Ilhavo, where his parents were, and Cascais. At an early age he began to compose his own songs. First he learned recognition in 1978 as winner of the Song Festival of the club Illiabum.

In 1980 he took the first time at the festival as part Canção. With the title playback, he won the following year the festival and represented his country at the Euro Vision Song Contest in Dublin. With nine points, he was second to last. In his own country 's poor performance did not detract from his popularity and he ended up in the same year with the title Pó de Arroz another hit.

Also for other artists, he wrote songs, including Herman José (A Canção do Beijinho, 1980) and Amália Rodrigues (O Senhor Extra - Terrestre, 1982). A debut album was released in 1982 under the title Algarismos, but did not achieve the desired success. In 1983, he reached the third place in the Festival da Canção on the side of Cândida Branca Flor with the patriotic title Vinho do Porto, Vinho de Portugal. This year, he completed his medical studies at the University of Lisbon, but devoted himself entirely to music in the episode. For the TV show Hermanias by Herman José in 1984, he composed the music for the fictional character Serafim Saudade. In 1985 he was in Tokyo at the World Popular Song Festival.

On August 26, he came to the National Highway 1 near Rio Maior in a traffic accident killed when a truck while overtaking frontally collided with his car. He was buried in São Domingos de Rana ( Cascais ).

15 years after his death, was published in 2003 a compilation with a selection of his more than 300 songs composed. 2008, several musicians recorded an album with interpretations of his songs.
