Charles Stebbins

Charles Stebbins (* 1789 in Williamstown, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, † 1873) was an American lawyer and politician from New York.

Career

Stebbins graduated in 1807 from Williams College, then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1810 and then practiced in Cazenovia (New York). In 1819 he married Eunice Masters ( 1794-1871 ).

He was a member from 1826 to 1829 at the Senate of New York, where he represented the 5th district. As resigned in March 1829, Martin Van Buren as governor to take up the post as Foreign Minister, the Lieutenant Governor, Enos T. Throop followed him into the governorship and Stebbins, who was now elected President pro tempore, as acting vice governor. Stebbins unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Senate from New York.

Subsequently, he was appointed by the governor, from 1830 to 1840 served as one of three bank inspectors. After his death he was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia.
