Charnay (Doubs)

Charnay is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Charnay is at 360 m, approximately 13 km south-southwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, on the plateau west of the valley of the Loue, lunged out here in an arc far to the north, east to the height of Mont de Cessey.

The area of ​​5.66 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is bounded on the east by the Loue that moves with spiral running in a valley, which is about 80 m deep into the surrounding plateau. The steep slopes are traversed in some places of Kalkfelswänden. The flat valley floor has a width of approximately 500 m. To the west, the municipality's area extends to the adjacent plateau of Charnay, the average is at 370 m and is composed partly of meadow land, partly by forest. In the northwest, the area extends to the meanders of the Loue ridge of the Bois du Paulet, on the 484 meters, the highest elevation of Charnay is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Charnay are Chenecey- Buillon the north and east, Courcelles and Palantine in the south and Cessey in the West.

Population

With 462 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Charnay is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1886, 139 were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1970s. Since then, the population has increased fivefold.

Economy and infrastructure

Charnay was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Chenecey- Buillon Courcelles. Another road connection with Cessey.
