Chimay ( Walloon Chimai ) is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut, Arrondissement Thuin.
Chimay is known for the Trappist monastery of Notre- Dame de Scourmont, especially for the Trappist beers brewed there. It was (initially as a priory ) founded in 1850 and in 1871 an abbey.
History
The church today Chimay went out in 1977 as part of a local government reform by the merger of fourteen previously separate places. These are Baileux, Bailièvre, Bourlers, Forges, L' Escaillère, Lompret, Rièzes, Robechies, Salles, Saint- Remy, Villers -la-Tour, Vaulx, Virelles and Chimay.
In Chimay was held the Grand Prix des Frontières 1929-1969, a motorsports event, which was announced after the Second World War for vehicles of Formula 2 and Formula 3 and later motorcycles. The circuit was over ten kilometers long.
