Clamart

Clamart is a French town with 52 731 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) southwest of Paris. It is located ten kilometers southwest of the capital on the D 906

The town consists of two parts, which are largely separated by the Bois de Clamart ( Clamart Forest ): Bas- Clamart, which forms the historical center, and petit Clamart, where there is most of the more modern buildings. Prior to the 1960s, it served pea fields, which were then built over.

History

The oldest evidence which points to a settlement of the region, is a megalithic tomb from the period 6000 BC

The first mention of the town dates back to the late 7th century, then in the form " ClauMar " or " Clanmar ". The name first appears in documents of the 11th century in its present form.

On March 27 1794 the famous philosopher and actor of the French Revolution Condorcet was arrested on the run from a warrant of the Jacobins in a pub in Clamart.

The first recorded aerial images of the world, by Nadar in 1858 from a balloon, were views of Petit- Clamart ( at that time still Petit Bicetre was called ).

In the German - Prussian War of 1870 /71 came here on October 13, 1870 and January 10, 1871 during the siege of Paris skirmishes.

On August 22, 1962 Petit- Clamart was the site of the failed assassination attempt of the OAS against Charles de Gaulle in connection with the willingness of the French government to dismiss Algeria to independence. The best-selling novel Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth represents the circumstances of the assassination

1961 there was a catastrophic subsidence due to the collapse of underground limestone quarries with 21 dead.
