Coat of arms of the Republic of Macedonia

The coat of arms of Macedonia was introduced by the Constitution on 27 July 1946, the Socialist Republic of Macedonia within Yugoslavia and adopted by the independent state of Macedonia in 1992 without changes.

Description

The coat of arms consists of a symmetrical wreath of ears of wheat, tobacco and poppy fruits, connected by a ribbon with the red- white pattern of a traditional costume.

In the oval space in the middle of the wreath is a rising golden sun is behind a blue mountain, at whose feet rivers and lakes are shown. The coat of arms to represent the wealth of the country, the struggle and freedom. Model for the structure of the coat of arms was the state emblem of the Soviet Union, whose schema many coat of arms of socialist states and the repeated even today finds himself in some coat of arms.

History

After independence, so far all attempts to introduce a new coat of arms. A 1992 proposal, an old national symbol of Macedonia, a golden lion in red plate to use as a coat of arms, failed because of the resistance of the Albanian community and the fact that both Macedonian parties like the VMRO- DPMNE and the Bulgarian coat of arms to use this image.

The coat of arms is depicted on Macedonian passports since 2005.

In 2009 the coat of arms was updated: the five-pointed, red, gold edged star, the traditional symbol of communism, was located at the top of the crest.
