Cutro

Cutro is a Southeast Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Crotone in Calabria. The municipality has 10,253 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). The community is directly adjacent to the province of Catanzaro. It is located about 12.5 km west-southwest of Crotone and about 37 km northeast north of Catanzaro. By the Ionian Sea is approximately 10 kilometers. In the vicinity of the Cutro Esaro springs.

History

Cutro is a Greek foundation ( Kyterion ) and was part of Magna Graecia. Since 1575 Cutro holds the title Città (City). The community was given the title by the Spanish King Philip II, who granted the title, because in a game of chess, the local personality Giò Leonardo Di Bona could succeed. On March 8, 1832 earthquake destroyed the village. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Calabrian region was depopulated by emigration to downright Germany and in Lombardy.

Through the community, the Strada Statale 109 di Sila Piccola and the Strada Statale Jonica 106 leading from the coast of the Gulf of Squillace. The place has a switching station (San Leonardo di Cutro ) and a station on the ferrovia Jonica from Reggio di Calabria to Taranto.
