Strongoli

Strongoli is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6623 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Crotone in Calabria. The community is located about 21 kilometers northwest of Crotone on the Ionian Sea.

History

Strongoli should lie on the ruins of the former settlement Petelia or Petilia, which was founded according to legend of Philoctetes and his companions. The settlement in Bruttium was devastated during the Second Punic War by the Carthaginians because they had fought on the side of Rome. In the war with Spartacus Petilia was contested.

Until 1818 Strongoli was a bishopric.

Traffic

Through the community, the Strada Statale 492 di Savelli and the Strada Statale Jonica 106 leads (also European Route 90). As on the Strada Statale 106 also passes through the ferrovia Jonica with the railway line from Reggio Calabria to Taranto the district Strongoli marina on the Mediterranean. Here there is also a train station.
