Savelli, Calabria

Savelli is a municipality with 1315 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Crotone, in Calabria, southern Italy.

Location and data

The 48.5 km ² village is situated 58 km north- west of the provincial capital Crotone, on the edge of the mountain La Sila. The population density is 31 people per square kilometer for Italian, but also by European standards very low. (for comparison: Calabria: 133 inh / km ², Italy. 196 inh / km ², Europe. 65 inh / km ². )

History

The story begins in the 17th century Savelli. After a bad earthquake in 1638, fled many families from their destroyed villages and took refuge in the mountains, in the previously uninhabited area Scalzaporri in the region Verzino, which belonged to the fief of the Prince of Cariati. Out of gratitude the people named their new home after his wife, Carlotta Savelli.

In 1813, then appointed King Gioacchino Murat Savelli as a separate parish, belonging to the province of Cosenza. Three years later, on 1 May 1816 Ferdinand I decided a redistribution of provinces so that Savelli was then extended to Catanzaro. This association remained for a long time continue until March 27, 1992, the new province of Crotone was founded, belongs to the Savelli today.

Policy

The municipal election held on 14 April 2008 won the Democratic PD with 75 % of the vote and Francesco Spina was the current mayor of Savelli. He replaces Angela Caligiuri after five years in office.
