Petilia Policastro

Petilia Policastro is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 9276 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Crotone in Calabria. The community is located about 29.5 km west- northwest of Crotone. Petilia Policastro borders the province of Cosenza. Since 2011 the church has the title of Città (City). Through the village flows the Tacina. A part of the Parco Nazionale della Sila runs through the municipality.

History

First settlements are likely to have existed from the third or second century in the area. Only under the Byzantines won settlements in importance.

Attractions

The caves Carsiche and Basiliane di San Demetrio are nationally known.

Traffic

The municipality is crossed by the Strada Statale 109 della Sila Piccola. In this one opens the Strada Statale 179 del Lago Ampollino. Between Crotone and Petilia Policastro was a nichtelektroifizierte railway 1930-1972. It was a narrow gauge railway (950 mm). The planned extension of the railway line from Cosenza to San Giovanni in Fiore by Petilia Policastro was never realized.
