Darien is a town in DuPage County of the U.S. state of Illinois. In the 2010 census, the city had 22,086 inhabitants.

Geography

Darien is located in the Chicago metropolitan area, approximately 26.8 miles from the Chicago airport.

The City Council of Darien until 1994 completely underground, when it was raised. Since then, only 75 % of the Town Hall are located under the ground. The city hall is surrounded on three sides by Downers Grove.

History

The first settlers came from New England via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes. Among the first settlers was Thomas Andrus with his family. They settled in 1835 at an old horse-drawn street.

Andrus named the area Cass. Together with a Father Beggs, he built the first church in Cass. The cemetery in the west of the church, can still be visited today. Over time, the church was used as a schoolhouse.

Elisha and Eliza Smart settled in 1838 in Cass, along with their 10 children. However, Elisha came soon in the gold rush and left the city to go to California. Martin B. Madden, an Irish immigrant, arrived in the 19th century and became the Cass City Council of Chicago and later even a member of the House of Representatives of the United States. He named the area in retrospect Castle Eden.
