Donndorf

Donndorf is a municipality in Kyffhauserkreis in Thuringia. It consists of the districts Kleinroda and Donndorf monastery, which gave the place its name.

History

At the beginning of the 9th century Donndorf is mentioned in a document in a directory of the Patrimony of the Archbishop Lull († 786) of Mainz built monastery Hersfeld. A medieval castle is said to have stood on the site of the local monastery. Studies confirmed this assumption. A gentleman Hermanus de Tundorf was called in 1190. The monastery Donndorf was first mentioned in documents in 1250. Its history began around this year with the foundation of the Cistercian monastery in the county Wiehe - Rabiswalde. 1525 the monastery of rebellious peasants was stormed. During the Reformation, it was converted as a Latin school in a convent school. The administration of the monastery and the convent school Donndorf held the Barons of Werther - Wiehe, since 1869 the barons of Werther - Bachra since 1540. The monastery farmed 170 acres, plus 250 acres of forest. The Convent School Foundation formed an intellectual center of the region.
