Engelbert Humperdinck (singer)

Engelbert (aka Engelbert Humperdinck, actually: Arnold George Dorsey ) ( born 2 May 1936 in Madras, India) is a British pop singer.

Life

His father served in the British Army in India, then part of the British Empire, and was in Madras, now Chennai, stationed, as Arnold George Dorsey was born in 1936 as one of ten siblings. Mid-1940s, the family moved to Leicester. At age eleven, Dorsey began to learn the saxophone.

He first worked in a factory in Leicester. At age 17, he took part in a pub in a singing competition and presented itself as a imitation talent. The mid-1950s he moved to the United States. Since he first had only limited success there, he took the proposal to his manager as artist name the name of the German late Romantic composer Engelbert Humperdinck on, which is world famous for its fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel. However, the reason for the choice of name was not the celebrity, but the absurdity of the name. Then began Engelberts world career that continues to this day. Engelbert received so far 68 gold and 26 platinum records.

In Germany, it only occurs under the stage name Engelbert. The heirs of the composer Engelbert Humperdinck had him use the artist's name legally prohibited, since no family ties exist.

In 1973, he appeared in a television show series - a British-German co-production - in conjunction with Marlène Charell. In 1983 he was seen in the series Fantasy Iceland, where he plays the shy singer Bob Smith.

In 1986 he succeeded in cooperation with the German music producer Jack White, particularly in German-speaking Europe a comeback. The album Dreaming with Engelbert 1987 reached No. 1 on the German charts. The following albums Remember - I Love You " (1987) and In Love - Engelbert (1988 ) both reached the Top 5 on the German charts in 1989, the next album I think of you -. An evening full of tenderness was produced by Dieter Bohlen and contained, among including a version of the number - one hits You're My Heart, You're My Soul by Modern Talking. spite rank 20 in the German charts could not build on the successes of the immediate previous albums Engelbert. worked in the 1990s he with various European producers - for example, Leslie Mandoki, Ralph Siegel, Peter Koelewijn and Chris Cox - together.

In 1996 he sang the title song of the Lesbian Seagull animated film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.

An internal selection of the BBC Engelbert was intended for British participants for the Euro Vision Song Contest 2012, reached there with twelve points and the song Love Will Set You Free but only the penultimate place.
