Es ist euch gut, daß ich hingehe, BWV 108

It is expedient for you that I go away ( BWV 108) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He wrote in Leipzig cantata for the 4th Sunday after Easter, and performed it on April 29, 1725 for the first time.

History and words

Bach composed the cantata in his second year in Leipzig for Sunday Cantate.

The prescribed readings for the Sunday were from 1.17 to 21 Jak LUT, " Every good gift comes from the Father of lights ", and John 16.5-15 LUT, Jesus promises in his farewell speeches the Comforter. Bach had in his second year in Leipzig chorale cantatas composed between the first Sunday after Trinity and Palm Sunday, however, was returned to Easter cantatas on to free text, perhaps because a lyricist no longer was available. It is the second of nine cantatas for the period between Easter and Pentecost to texts by Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, after that you will weep and lament, BWV 103 Bach shortened their text, as in other cantatas. The text begins with a verse from the Gospel. A second quotation from the Gospel appears in Theorem 4 Sentences 2 and 3 deal with the hope of redemption, sentence 5 is a prayer for guidance to the death. The poet used to complete the tenth verse of Paul Gerhardt's hymn to God the Father, send your Spirit (1653), which brings faith in God's leading to expression.

Bach led the cantata on 29 April 1725 for the first time.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is staffed with three soloists, alto, tenor and bass, four-part choir, two oboe d' amore, two violins, viola, violoncello piccolo and continuo.

Music

As in the Cantata for the same occasion last year, Whither goest thou? , Bach can sing a verse from the Gospel in the first sentence the bass as the Vox Christi. The oboe d' amore plays as Obligat instrument long-span melodies. The set without formal title is between aria and arioso. The following aria is dominated by a virtuoso solo violin. A brief secco recitative leads to a further quotation from the Gospel, which is sung by the choir. They appear in three sections, each as a fugue. Since the theme of the third joint the similar to the first, created a modified da capo form. The theorem is applied simultaneously motet, as the music follows the words and the instruments playing colla parte with the voices mostly. The first section deals with " Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, has come ," the second begins " For he will not speak from himself ", the third expresses "and what is the future, he will tell ". The final aria is accompanied by the strings, dominated by the first violin. The cantata will be decided by a four -part chorale set to the tune of " Come unto me, saith the Son of God ."
