Flag of Belarus

The current flag of Belarus was adopted on 7 June 1995. It replaced the white-red- white flag of the Soviet Union national flag after independence of the country and is now used by part of the opposition.

Description

The national flag again follows more the appearance of the Belarusian flag from the time when the country was still part of the Soviet Union. Merely to the illustration of the hammer and sickle was omitted.

The decorative pattern on the left edge is a traditional Belarusian pattern. The color red symbolizes the blood that was shed in defense of the homeland, the color green, the forests of the country.

Historical flags

1917-1919

After the abdication of the Russian Tsar in 1917 a white-red- white flag was introduced for the newly created White Ruthenian People's Republic. The colors come from the traditional figure of the Pahonja - a white knight in a red field.

1919-1937

After a successful Communist coup in 1919, initially a plain red flag for the Lithuanian - Belorussian SSR was introduced.

By passing the sole Byelorussian SSR, the golden initials " SSRB " were added in Cyrillic script in the left upper canton.

From 1919 to 1925, the government in exile of the Belarusian People's Republic used a white-black- red-black- white horizontally striped flag.

1937-1951

In 1937, the letters turned into " BSSR " and the appropriate flag has been extended to a golden hammer, a golden sickle and a red star. In the 1940s, these symbols were removed and a gold border has been added instead.

1940 -1951

1951-1991

On 25 December 1951, the BSSR introduced a new flag. This was similar to today's, but was left up in the red box again to see the hammer and sickle with star; the back of the flag contained no icon. In contrast to today's flag ornament White appeared on red instead of red on white.

1991-1995

After the end of the USSR, the white-red- white flag was on 19 September 1991 again the national flag of Belarus. With the election of President Alexander Lukashenko in 1994 a socialist course was aimed again and so new state symbols were introduced a year later, strongly reminiscent of the Soviet era.
