Flag of Tokelau

The introduction of the flag of Tokelau and the other new national symbols has been adopted at a meeting of the Regional Parliament ( General Fono ) on 29 May 2008.

Prior to its official launch, but still had to approve the draft, the New Zealand government. The official presentation of the flag by the New Zealand Governor-General Anand Satyanand was held on September 7, 2009. On 22 October 2009, the flag was first hoisted in front of the Parliament of New Zealand.

Construction

The Blue Flag is a traditional Polynesian canoe with yellow sails. To the left, four white stars represent the Southern Cross, which is also reflected in the New Zealand flag.

Coloring

The blue of tokelauischen flag corresponds to the blue of the flag of New Zealand. The information in HTML, RGB, CMYK, as well as pantone color do not represent exactly the same shade is but correspond only approximately.

History

As a dependent territory of Tokelau in New Zealand is currently, originally had only the New Zealand flag official status on the islands. 1989 an unofficial draft was presented. The three stars symbolized the three islands of which Tokelau is.

Finally, a political process was set in motion, which should determine the future political status of Tokelau final. At the same time a call for ideas about the national symbols of the archipelago had been advertised. In two referendums on self-determination of Tokelau (February 2006 and October 2007), however, the independence supporters could not achieve the necessary two-thirds majority of the votes for their cause, which the previous status quo was preserved.

In June 2007, the regional parliament had decided on the future of an independent Tokelau symbols. The proposal was already the current version similar. However, the four stars of the geographical location of the islands were arranged according to which in addition to the three islands of Tokelau and actual Swain Iceland belonged. This belongs to the same island chain and is also culturally closely connected to Tokelau, but politically it is part of American Samoa. Since the independence referendum in 2007 narrowly failed, and this flag was never introduced.

Earlier drafts

1989 unofficial flag design was presented. Shown is an atoll in yellow on a blue background, interrupted by a palm tree in green and three white stars Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo are supposed to represent.
