Description

The flag of the island nation wearing a Union Jack because of membership in the Commonwealth of Nations in the upper canton. The Union Jack takes exactly one quarter of the flag area. Model for the flag design was the Blue Ensign, a blue flag with the Union Jack in the upper canton. In contrast to the Blue Ensign the blue is much brighter and to stand for the sky and the sea. The bright blue is also deliberately chosen to better distinguish the flags of Australia and New Zealand.

On the flying end is the coat of arms of Fiji, whose lower part is quartered by a cross of St. George. The first box, top left, contains three sugar cane plants, the second, upper right, contains a palm tree. In the third box, bottom left, a white dove of peace is shown, and the last field, bottom right, shows a banana tree. Above this is the golden British lion holding a coconut in the paws.

Importance

History
