Frank Dundr

Frank Dundr ( born January 25, 1957 in Sonneberg as Frank Butz ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic. In 1980 he succeeded in the quadruple sculls Olympic victory.

Frank Butz joined in 1973 by the Athletics for rowing, because the newly formed sculls of the SC Dynamo Berlin was still missing man. In 1974 he occupied already with Norbert Buhr second place in the European Junior Championships in the double sculls. A year later he won at the Junior World Championships with Gerd Lützner. In 1977 he married and took the name of his wife.

Frank Dundr belonged in 1977 to the new quadruple scull of the GDR together with Martin Winter, Karl -Heinz Bussert and Wolfgang Güldenpfennig. This boat won the gold medal at the World Championships in Amsterdam. With Joachim Dreifke for Güldenpfennig the boat defended the title at the World Championships in 1978 in New Zealand. At the 1980 Olympic Games Uwe Heppner and Carsten Bunk sat with winter and Dundr in the quadruple sculls, which the Soviet boat won gold with a half -second lead. Four years later Dundr sat in the quadruple sculls, who won at the Rotsee regatta in Lucerne, missed because of the Olympic boycott Dundr his second Olympic participation.

Dundr was a skilled construction worker, but studied at the military academy political science. Until 1990 he worked as a commissioner in Sonneberg. In the GDR, he was several times awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit: 1978 in bronze, 1980 silver and 1984 gold.
