Gambia national football team

The Gambian national football team is organized by the Gambia Football Association. The team of The Gambia, which is also called The Scorpions had never before participated in a World Cup or European Championship. The team is coached by Luciano Mancini.

In the Football World Cup 2006, the team was defeated in the first qualifying round against the team from Liberia just with a score of 2:3 and could not qualify it.

Coach

Sang Ndong was over ten years coach of the national team until he was released by the Association in 2003. The office remained vacant until mid-September 2006, when the former German Bundesliga player Antoine " Tony" Hey was (68 Bundesliga appearances for Fortuna Dusseldorf and Schalke 04) coach of the team. He remained until April 2007 and they separated, because there were differences about the payment. Shortly coached the Spaniard José Martínez the team. Now, since May 2008, the Belgian Paul Put coach of the national team, he is assisted by Peter Bonu Johnson. The contract with the put was dissolved on 31 August 2011, as a fundamental failure in the African Cup of 2012 was given. The former assistant coach Bonu Johnson coached the team.

In May 2012, Bonu was replaced by the former assistant coach, the Italian Luciano Mancini. Bonu is now an assistant coach. Mancini will now accompany in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2014 Gambia.

Timo Uster is a native of Berlin and German citizens. His parents are German. However, Uster Gambian grandparents, which allows him to play for Gambia.

The Senegalese professional footballer Babacar N'Diaye, currently in Preußen Münster under contract, received in early January 2007 by the Gambian Association a request for a friendly against Saudi Arabia, but called off.

In qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil Gambia could not prevail against the Ivory Coast, Morocco and Tanzania, and had no chance to qualify already on 8 June 2013 following a 0-3 home defeat against Ivory Coast.

Offspring

U-17 national football team

The men's team had no tournament successes, this is the youth team, the U -17 - called the Baby Scorpions - successful. You could make a tournament victory when she won in May 2005 at the African Cup against the selection from Ghana 1-0 and thus Africa champion. Thus they could to the U-17 World Cup, which was held in Peru in September 2005. There they defeated in a dramatic entrance by the reigning world champion, the Brazilian U -17 team and also won the second game.
