Geographical Location

Gaukönigshofen located 20 km south of Würzburg in the midst of fertile Ochsenfurter Gaus in Thierbachtal.

History

Already from the time of the Linear Pottery culture (ca. 5000 BC) can be detected first settlements. Settlement evidence comes also from the Bronze Age (1800-1000 BC ) and the Early Iron Age, also Hallstatt period. This Gaukönigshofen is proven to be one of the oldest communities in the county.

The Celts used 400 years before Christ, the benefits of the fertile soil. The Outbound castellan mountain, located between Acholshausen and Gaukönigshofen over the Thierenbach, is a vestige of that time. She was originally built as a refuge fort and was expanded over the centuries to a medieval castle. During the Peasants' War, it was completely destroyed. Today is only the moat to detect. Coat of arms

The dated at 1607 local coat of arms was discovered in 1961 during the renovation of the Town Hall of Gaukönigshofen in the triangular pediment of a portal. By tincture silver and red is drawn to the old coat of arms of the Bishopric of Würzburg colors, formerly exercised the sovereignty over the church.

Twinning

Partnerships with the towns of Bad Königshofen in the grave box and Königshofen in the Tauber Valley, which were also first mentioned in 741 as a royal residence. Also a partnership with Val d' Odon ( a merger of the villages of Baron sur Odon, Evrecy, Eterville and Gavrus, since 2012 also Bougy ) consists in Normandy since 1997.

  • Jakob von Hirsch ( * 1765 in Gaukönigshofen, † 1840 in Planegg ), Jewish banker and merchant, court banker of King Maximilian I of Bavaria.
  • Paul Lehrieder (* 1959), politician, since 2005 Member of the German Bundestag, has lived since childhood in the village.
  • Werner Kleeman (* 1919), by the Nazis persecuted and who had returned as a U.S. soldier Jew, who published his findings in a book.

Gaukönigshofen was chosen in 2009 by the listeners of 106.9 Radio Gong Würzburg for " coolest community of Lower Franconia ". The main prize was a free open air with Nevio, which took place in front of about 4,000 spectators.
