Gene FitzGerald

Eugene "Gene " FitzGerald (Irish Eoghan Mac Gearailt, born August 21, 1932 † 14 December 2007) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and sat from 1972 to 1987 in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

Biography

FitzGerald was elected on August 2, 1972 for his party in a by-election in the 19th Dáil Éireann. From Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Jack Lynch, he was appointed on 5 July 1977 in the run of this government of Fianna Fáil as labor minister and held that post under Lynch's successor, Charles Haughey to 16 December in 1980. On 24 March 1980, he was also Minister for the Civil Service. In a cabinet reshuffle, he took over on 16 December 1980 at the Ministry of Labour, the Minister of Finance. After the electoral defeat of Fianna Fáil, he resigned as Finance Minister and Minister for the Civil Service of the Government on June 30, 1981.

After the defeat of questions by the Fine Gael government under Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald called him Charles Haughey again in his government. There he was again Minister of Labour and Minister for the Civil Service 9 March to 14 December 1982. In the elections 1987 the 25th Dáil Éireann, he opted not to run again and was eliminated thus out of the House of Commons. In addition to his deputies activity FitzGerald also sat from 1984 to 1994 in the European Parliament. Such dual mandate was possible at this time.
